After More Than 30 Years, Triumph’s Legacy Lives On: -- February 5, '08 |
After More Than 30 Years, Triumph’s Legacy Lives On:
Canadian Music Hall of Fame to Induct Legendary Rock Band at The 2008 JUNO Awards
http://www.junoawards.ca/
Toronto, ON (February 5, 2008) – At the 2008 JUNO Awards nominee media conference held today in Toronto, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced this year’s Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee,
the legendary rock band, Triumph. The original band members will be honoured at The 2008 JUNO Awards in Calgary on Sunday, April 6th, broadcast on CTV from the Pengrowth Saddledome.
“Triumph helped define arena rock as we know it today – they truly knew how to put on a spectacular concert experience for the fans,” says Melanie Berry, CARAS President. “We are very proud to recognize them in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.”
Members Rik Emmett (vocals/guitars), Mike Levine (bass/keyboards) and Gil Moore (vocals/drums) were destined for stardom when they formed the Canadian hard-rock trio, Triumph, in 1975. Their debut self-titled album was released in 1976 by Attic Records and quickly reached gold status. On the strength of the group’s non-stop touring schedule throughout Canada and the USA, Triumph had rapidly built a large and loyal fan base.
"It's a tremendous honour to be part of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In one way, the reunion is like a surprising, surreal whirlwind. In another sense, it is also very humbling,” said Rik Emmett. “I lost my brother to cancer last year, and he was always one of my biggest supporters - and a huge fan of Triumph - so an award like this also pays tribute to an enduring relationship with music lovers everywhere."
“I couldn't be more thrilled. This is the ultimate honour for Triumph,” said bass guitarist/keyboardist Mike Levine.
Fellow band mate Gil Moore adds, “It’s a humbling experience and an honour to be recognized by your peers in this way – it has inspired me to start playing again.”
Triumph followed up their debut album with the multi-platinum Rock ‘N’ Roll Machine (1977) and Just a Game (1979) releases – both of which are considered rock classics. The band became increasingly notorious for their live performances, dubbing them the godfathers of arena rock.
By the ‘80s, Triumph truly became a force to be reckoned with, releasing a string of gold and platinum-certified albums including Progressions of Power, Allied Forces, Never Surrender, Thunder Seven and The Sport of Kings. Their bombastic over-the-top arena tours combined with such classic radio staples ("Fight the Good Fight," "Magic Power," "Lay It On The Line") and multiple JUNO Award nominations solidified the group as one of rock’s top concert attractions.

2.
In 1995, the entire Triumph catalog was re-mastered and reissued on CD. These days, several producers at the Metalworks Studios’ facilities in Mississauga, Ontario, are hard at work preparing future Triumph DVD and CD releases from the vaults.
In June 2008, the original members of Triumph, Emmett, Lavine and Moore, will unite to perform a reunion world premiere at the prestigious Sweden Rock Festival.
The Canadian Music Hall of Fame was established in 1978 by CARAS to honour individuals or groups who have made an outstanding contribution toward the greater international recognition of Canadian artists and music. Last year’s inductee to the Canadian Hall of Fame was Bob Rock and previous inductees include Bryan Adams, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and the late Bruce Fairbairn.
A complete list of Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees can be found at http://www.junoawards.ca.
Sponsors of the 2008 JUNO Awards include FACTOR, Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s “Canada Music Fund”, The Government of Alberta, The City of Calgary, Tourism Calgary, Calgary Arts Development and Radio Starmaker Fund.
Broadcast sponsors for The 2008 JUNO Awards are Pontiac, Doritos, TD Canada Trust and Rogers.

TRIUMPH UNITES FOR SWEDEN ROCK FESTIVAL -- January 18, '08 |
The classic Triumph line-up (Rik Emmett/Mike Levine/Gil Moore) could not have selected a better way to reunite after a two decade absence - with what will undoubtedly be a show-stopping appearance at the 2008 Sweden Rock Festival. Held over a four-day span (June 4-7), the Sweden Rock Festival has been an annual event since 1992, and over the past few years, has been held in Norje, outside of Sölvesborg.
This year’s festival is featuring one of its strongest line-ups ever - in addition to Triumph’s highly anticipated appearance, such renowned groups as Judas Priest, Def Leppard, Blue Öyster Cult, and Whitesnake (among others) have also been confirmed. "We have had Triumph in mind for many years and hoped that they would play together again one day . When we saw Triumph was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall Of Fame, then read some statements from the members that "maybe one day we will do something together again," we jumped in with an immediate offer - and it looks like we’re helping write some new history! A fantastic band with so many classic albums is just what Sweden Rock Festival is all about. I am very proud to be able to present this band at this years Sweden Rock Festival. I’m just one of many fans that are looking forward to this fantastic show." - Ingolf Persson, Sweden Rock Festival
As one of the godfathers of prog metal and leading lights of arena rock, Triumph formed in 1975, and built a large and loyal fanbase by the late ‘70s on the strength of their non-stop touring schedule throughout Canada and the USA and the success of their classic albums, ‘Rock & Roll Machine’ and ‘Just A Game.’
But it was in the 1980’s when Triumph truly became a force to be reckoned with, as a string of gold/platinum-certified albums (‘Progressions of Power,’ ‘Allied Forces,’ ‘Never Surrender,’ and ‘Thunder Seven’) and classic hits ("Fight the Good Fight," "Magic Power", "Lay It On The Line") solidified the group as one of rock’s top concert attractions. With their music continuing to live on during their absence, fans will now finally get the opportunity to catch this live legend on stage once more.

First AIRTIME Reviews are in! -- November 21, '07 |
From www.rocksquad.net
Airtime - Liberty Manifesto
When this disc arrived in my mailbox, I would have to say it was one of the most anticipated releases I have received to date. That says a lot after recent releases from Ministry, Queensryche, Motley Crue, Foo Fighters and more arriving in said mailbox.
This release, from Rik Emmett (Songwriter, Guitarist, Vocalist, Ex-Triumph) and Mike Shotton (Drummer, Vocalist and Songwriter, Von Groove) has been awaited with much anticipation from Rik Emmett and Triumph fans alike. The first rock n roll record, HARD rock, PROG rock from Emmett arguably since the last Triumph album he performed on, Surveillance, many say since Thunder 7. Yes, Rik had rock releases early in his solo career, with Absolutely and Ipso Facto, but they were already showing a softer/pop type approach to Rik's writing.
Enter Liberty Manifesto. From the wide open progressive feel of the lead off track Edge Of Your Mind, The Rob Zombie heaviness of Midnight Black and Blue, to what I consider the crowning jewel of this disc, Liberty, the listener is shown a side of Rik Emmett, that I am sure few were not sure existed as a songwriter and performer. Edgy. Heavy, technically amazing. Shotton's pickiness in perfecting layered backing vocal tracks, and production excellence are evident, and the disc sounds HUGE, which I am sure is a product of mastering at the award winning Metalworks Studios in Toronto. Not exactly what I envisioned a scant year ago, for a "reunion" with his ex-Triumph band mates, but an excellent choice to get the right warmth and feel to these songs for the mastering process.
One other thing...Rik Emmett's voice has stayed amazingly fit over these years, and if possible, his rock guitar chops may be stronger now, after all these years of acoustic work. He has not lost a thing, except perhaps the spandex.....
This disc is going to appeal to all rock, progressive rock, and hard rock fans, as it displays a myriad of feels, influences and styles, and much to my own joyous surprise, a hint of the past in the beautiful acoustic piece Headstream, running directly into the driving hook laden River Runs Deep. It reminded me of the jewel that became expected on every new Triumph release. There are no losers on this cd, and the only thing that could really ice the cake on this one, would be news of a tour to support the project. This is one of the best releases of the rock world this year bar none. Stand out tracks include:
Liberty 8 River Runs Deep 8 Midnight Black and Blue 8 Moving Day 8 Transmutation
From www.classicrockrevisited.com
Airtime - Liberty Manifesto
Rik Emmett is famous, first and foremost, as being one of the best guitar players to walk the planet. He is a multi-faceted musician and plays as a virtuoso in many genres including rock, jazz and classical. Now, after years of playing every kind of guitar music known to man, he has formed a new band called Airtime and returned to playing the style of hard rock that put him in the headlines in the first place.
Airtime features Rik on guitar, bass and vocals and Michael Shotton on drums. The disc opens up with "Edge of Your Mind" proving Rik still has all the tools of trade needed to crank up his rock n' roll machine. The tune features a blistering solo right out of the box that captures the listeners attention and makes you want to hear more.
"Midnight Black & Blue" is a hard rocker that showcases Emmett's flair for the dramatic. Rik continues the tradition he had with Triumph by including an instrumental piece on the album. This time around it is a jazzy number titled "Headstream." Following the mellow reprieve, Emmett launches into one of the best tracks on the CD titled "River Runs Deep."
Another standout track is "Find Your Way" which starts slow but builds into a excellent piece of music featuring a message of hope. "Addicted" is a slab of hard rock riffage that is sure to be a fan favorite. "Code 9" sees Emmett reach out musically. The song is part funk master James Brown, part Led Zep and part Triumph. In between the choppy chords and harmony chorus Rik plays a melodic and ripping solo. Musically, "Code 9" may be the gem of the disk.
After the ballad "Moving Day" the album comes to a close with "Transmutation." The track starts off with a Zeppelin-esque riff before tapering off into open space where Emmett takes liberties with the fretboard. Portions of the rhythm remind one of the Zep classic "Kashmir" but don't be fooled into thinking this is tribute track. The song is 5:23 of pure guitar pyrotechnics. Emmett lets loose with flairs of melodic runs that turn into bold, full bodied riffs. The mood of the song bounces between bang yer head/wave yer fist in the air hard rock and jaw dropping musicianship.
We are not sure why Rik Emmett picked this particular time to crank up the amp and let loose but we are glad he did. Airtime is a winner from start to finish and his welcome return to the world of rock. One could call it a triumph of sorts -- ah ya know that was coming now, didn't cha?

Hugh's Room for Dec. 13 Shaping Up as Something Special -- December 7, '06 |
Concert-goers to the Dec. 13 gig at Hugh's Room in Toronto are being invited to bring their video cameras and shoot away. In addition, the audio will be recorded for later release as a live Troubs CD. Rik & Dave are also planning to have a Limited Edition Bootleg of some other recent live performances, available at the merch table on this night only. [more]
In the wake of last March's Hugh's Room date, a live boot clip ended up on Youtube. So, at least for the Dec. 13 show, Dave and Rik have decided to take a cue from Pearl Jam, and indulge all videographers and photographers with similar documentary cravings. (They trust that fans will not infringe upon the enjoyment of other patrons.) The concert is slated to be recorded live by Steve Skingley, and the resulting CD promises to follow up as a more comprehensive audio treat for fans than the 'official' live Troubadours "teaser" bootleg, being made available at the Hugh's Room merch table the night of the show as a stocking stuffer for the dedicated Troubs fanatic.

What a Summer! -- September 1, '06 |
From a smooth jazz festival in Canada to a heavy metal festival in Germany: from Artistic Directing a songwriting workshop to hanging & jamming with Alex Lifeson at the Guitar Workshop Plus: from family time at the cottage, to five classic rock outdoor shows, to an idyllic afternoon acoustic duo gig at the Chateau-des-Charmes winery, to a feature spot on the convention floor at the MIAC show: what a summer!
And now - what's new? Back to school at Humber: the Airtime project mix is nearing completion: CBC is seriously considering the radio show pilot: new guitars on the way from Yamaha: and as soon as autumn hits, we'll go from Arizona to St. Catharines to the Ottawa Valley: plus, back into the studio to [finally!] get started on "Marco's Secret Songbook". yep - it's shaping up to be an amazing fall season.

Concert Generates $13,000 for the Willow Creek Food Pantry! -- January 30, '06 |
[from an email to Rick Wharton]
I just wanted to thank you and your crew with Rik and Dave Dunlop for such a wonderful concert you put on this past weekend at Willow Creek Church in Crystal Lake, IL. We have gotten back so much positive feedback from the concert and everyone is clammering for more. This concert generated over $13,000 in profit to go toward the purchasing of a Food Pantry for the community. We serve approximately 1,200 people a month at our 900 sq ft. basement classroom pantry and half of them are children. Hunger in America is a sad but real situation. Please thank Rik and Dave again for me, for putting on one of the best concerts and generating this kind of income for our building project. Hopefully we can put on an encore performance next year!
Sincerely,
Marilyn Georgy

Feb. 18 Chicago area "Doubleheader Night" details... -- January 10, '06 |
Just to clarify - Feb. 18 is a doubleheader night in the Chicago area. The date with "Jim Peterik and World Stage" at the MacAnnich Arts Center in the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn just outside of Chicago is a VERY SPECIAL GUEST status. Right at the beginning of the 8:00 p.m. start of the show, or pretty close to it, Rik will be doing two songs with Jim and his band ["Lay It On The Line" and "Magic Power"], and maybe doing "El Cuento" in a duet with Dave Dunlop, if ground travel logistics can be arranged. Then Rik [and Dave] will hop in a car and drive downtown to the House of Blues to play a headlining, full classic rock band set [probably going on just after 11 p.m. or so].

"Guitar God" Rik Emmett joins Big Shiny Tunes live on stage! -- December 30, '05 |
Rik showed up as a surprise guest at "Smilin' Jack's Bar & Grill" on Friday Dec. 16 and got up on stage to jam with Lou Riggillo's band during Lou's 40th birthday bash. The connection between the two musicians runs through Ed Stone, who engineered thousands of hours of sessions for Rik over the years, and who happens to be Lou's brother-in-law.
Email from Lou Riggillo, bandleader of Big Shiny Tunes:
The band & I were overwhelmed at his appearance & we were truly honoured &
privileged to have been lucky enough to have been able to perform with him. This is for real & not just the blah, blah blah you may have received from others!
It was AWESOME! Check out some of the pictorial evidence at
www.bigshinytunes.com
Let Rik know how much I appreciated him giving of his time & how much I am aware
that he rarely does this kind of thing & how special he has made me feel! Also
apologize to him if I said or did anything stupid, let him know I am sorry, but
I was kinda feelin' giddy like a teenage schoolgirl.
Hope it's OK I added a link from our website to www.rikemmett.com to have our
friends check out his great site. I've also posted some photos from the evening
@ www.bigshinytunes.com
Please check them out & give Rik a million thanks!
Cheers!.... Lou Rigillo Big Shiny Tunes

LIVE @ 10 GIGS is a hit! -- September 12, '05 |
LIVE @ 10 GIGS has been in the top 10 best seller list at Maple Music for the last 6 weeks! This is a major compliment and testament to the appeal of this latest DVD release. We've received many positive comments about this DVD and we'd like to share one with you now:
Hey Rick,
Kenny from Dallas here. Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed the "Live at 10 Gigs" DVD. You should be very proud of this!! And, "as advertised," it definitely has a bootleg feel, yet, justifies the $ with its unique clarity and intimate perspective. I am, so very happy, to finally own some Rik audio (and, video to boot!) newer than Absolutely! That "weathered" Absolutely
purchase may haunt me worse than my last accessory purchase-- The "infamous" Thunder Seven T-shirt! (I know you keep up with the network posts--geese! I am embarrassed, but, I am, at least, honest!).
One thing about Absolutely: I ran out and purchased it immediately! I know now that you had a lot to do with it, and that is very cool. But, I did make it a point to quickly snag the first solo release of one of my favorite guitarists/people in the world at the
time. But, time goes by...and, flies...blah, blah.
Until now, I haven't seen Rik play a complete musical track since I saw him on the "Surveillance" tour, and, that was with my own eyes. Yeah, I have checked out the website snippets, but, I haven't purchased/downloaded any videos or DVD's. This new DVD is very unique. It reminds me of all the reasons that I became a Rik fan, at conception. It was all about the playing. You did a great job of capturing "Rik's playing." I mentioned in my "inaugural" post that Rik is the reason that I quit the drums and began playing guitar--again!
It makes me very sad that I haven't kept up with all of his progress to date. I'm sorry that I haven't purchased all of the solo CD's and DVD's available.
Mostly, I am sorry for the fact that I haven't seen him when he has come to Texas. There have been many opportunities--and, I have missed them all. Yeah, I could blame it on lack of promotion--but, no excuses. I should have sought him out and checked in on what he was doing.
Sorry, as usual, my topics start off slow, and, then go off into rants! Here are a couple of my favorite "funlights" while viewing the new DVD:
1) "Cameraman provided by Johnnie Walker." I was wondering when that "Walker Guy" was going to stand up and take credit for some of that camera handy work!! He-he-he!!! Ahhh, but, "the comfort that he brings." Hey, it's a bootleg, right!!! It's perfect!!
2) Late in the DVD, when you shout at Rik from the Balcony, "Glad to see you wearing men's clothes again, Rik!," I paused the DVD, and told my wife, "Rock stars should never pick a verbal fight with a comedian!" I think there was then a "comedian" reference by Rik, or someone, after that--but, I was totally with you Spud!!! Don't start "heckling" a comedian, Mr. Guitar Wiz, or pay the price!! That was really funny.
I am so envious of you (that's not a deadly sin, right?) for your
personal access that makes this DVD so special. Then again, you don't need some 'ol boy from Dallas to tellin' you how significant that is, right?--you already know it!
One final note. After about "six" of the gigs, my wife asked me to
purchase some of Rik's solo recordings for her for her birthday on September 19th.
Looks like I will soon own the whole Rik musical library--it's about time.
Let Rik know, for me, that this "Live at 10 Gigs" DVD, has already made him one new fan. Hopefully, more fans to come.....from Dallas!!!
Respectively,
Kenny Eakin

Rik Emmett and Eddie Van Halen -- August 23, '05 |
After two years of research, and a lifetime of being a Van Halen fan, author Abel Sanchez has completed a brand new Van Halen book. Entitled "Van Halen 101," it is currently being published by Author House and slated for release in September 2005. You may check www.authorhouse.com for details.
"Van Halen 101" is a comprehensive guide to the amazing history, music, impact & influence of the mighty Van Halen. No hype, no bs, just the facts. From the birth of the Van Halen brothers all the way up to the recent 2004 tour, it's all here. The book includes a foreword by Brian May of Queen, as well as a tribute to Edward Van Halen by over 100 of the world's greatest musicians! From Allan Holdsworth and Steve Vai to James Hetfield, Rik Emmett and Zakk Wylde, over 100 of the baddest musicians on the planet came forward to personally share their thoughts, memories and stories about EVH. There's plenty of commentary on Van Halen, the band, too. In fact, here are a few excerpts of the commentary you will find inside this book:
"Without a doubt, Eddie Van Halen is the greatest guitar player who has ever lived." -- Zakk Wylde
"I always thought Edward was great. He's a fantastic guitar player." -- Allan Holdsworth
"What a wonderful musician...absolutely the pinnacle of guitar playing in our lifetime." -- Brian May
"Eddie Van Halen is certainly one of the top innovative virtuosos in history." -- Ted Nugent
"When Van Halen burst onto the scene, it was really all about Eddie, as far as I was concerned. It was an 'Eruption,' and it changed the face of rock lead guitar forever." -- Rik Emmett
"Van Halen 101" not only covers and discusses Edward Van Halen and the band in great detail, it also features and gives major respect to many different players, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Allan Holdsworth and Randy Rhoads. In fact, there is even a chapter dedicated to the late, great Randy Rhoads where the author brought in none other than Kevin DuBrow, frontman for Randy's original band, Quiet Riot. Kevin discusses everything from how he and Randy met and formed Quiet Riot to what it was like to play the same club scene as Van Halen during the mid-to-late 1970s and witness their growth as a band.

Rik gets his Diploma.... finally! -- October 23, '04 |
READ THE SPEECH Rik gave to the graduating class of 2004 at Humber College.
On October 23, Rik will receive an honourary diploma at the Convocation Graduation Ceremonies at Humber College in Toronto. He will also make a speech for the graduates of the programs in the School of Creative and Performing Arts - Music, Theatre Performance, Theatre Production, Arts Administration, Creative Writing, and Comedy.
Humber College is Rik's old alma mater, where he attended back in the fall of 1973. So it's only taken him 31 years of Hard Knocks to achieve his equivalency. He believes that fact alone will inspire both young musicians and comedy writers.

Workshop Is Champ In Odessa -- August 31, '04 |
Three days ago in Odessa, Ontario, Rik Emmett headlined the first annual Canadian Fingerstyle Acoustic Guitar Championship, but for Rik the highlight of the weekend was doing a workshop.
"It was a great honour to do this workshop, and share the stage with three other phenomenal guitarists: Don Ross, Tony McManus, and Bob Evans," says Rik. "These gentlement rank among the finest acoustic guitarists on the planet."
The four 6-string legends jammed on some of Rik's new songs from his "Good Faith" album, opening with "Way Back Home" and ending the workshop with "Wicked Miss." Sandwiched between these tunes were some good stories, great jokes, and some beautiful examples of the guitar pieces that have won these musicians the awards that established their reputations as World Champion fingerpickers.
Everyone had a great time and we hope this event will continue its success and become an annual affair.

One day to go... -- June 3, '04 |
The official launch of the new web site is just hours away now. A touch of paint here, a straightening of a picture there, and we're ready to go! I'm excited, aren't you?!
This was a huge undertaking, but I think we've done an incredible job. Everything has been worked and reworked, built and torn down and rebuilt, and we've ended up with a site that everyone can be proud of.
I can't wait to see the feedback from the Network members! I know it can't all be good, but I'm hoping that the majority of our members will like the improvements and changes we've made.
If you have something you'd like to say about the site, a suggestion, a compliment, a complaint... email Dave

Rik's busy these days... -- May 26, '04 |
Rik is currently working on two studio/writing projects. One is a multi-level concept piece with the working title, "The Secret Storybook of Enrico Trovatore": the other is a rock album project, in collaboration with Mike Shotton [from Von Groove].
Rik will be receiving an honorary diploma from his old alma mater, Humber College, in the convocation ceremony next Oct. 23. There is some irony in the fact that he attended the program for one semester in 1972, and has been teaching a part-time music biz career development course at the college since 2001. So it only took him 32 years attending The School of Hard Knocks to earn some honorary equivalency.
Rik's catalogue continues to reinforce his eclecticism. His "Good Faith" music has been featured on national public radio, smooth jazz formats, as well as classic rock stations. And even though the lion's share of his media earnings come from the U.S., his last statements also contained accountings from Japan, Ireland, Portugal, Estonia, the Czech Republic, Spain, and of course, Canada. Rik's catalogue has been used in television, movies, NFL Films, ABC-TV for an Olympic speed-skating profile, and more recently for things as diverse as a kids' dance recital in Texas, to a documentary film about nude artists' models.

wow... look at that... -- April 17, '04 |
It's been a couple of weeks now, and I am officially another year older... ;)
BUT ON TO THE SITE NEWS!
We're another couple of steps closer to a release. I know nobody is reading this right now, but I am keeping a little journal of things so that everyone can read the historic progress of the new site.
Anyway, the photo gallery is completely functional and we're on our way to having the new and (much) improved message board working as well.
Great things are coming... I'm excited.
Oh, did I mention mp3 and VIDEO clips??? :)

It's almost done... -- March 31, '04 |
I know you won't see any of this news until the new site is actually launched, but I thought I would keep updating this area so that there is some archive of the progress being made.
The site is almost done. Most of the difficult programming has been completed, it's just a matter of entering content in now. There will be lots of stuff for you to look at and download.
The goal is for this site to have everything the old one did (and more) and to be a little easier to get around for all our Network members as well as everyone else! :)
